UPOINT – A new model for the treatment of chronic prostatitis

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a common condition in urogynecology clinics and often leads to inappropriate treatment approaches due to its complex etiology and non-specific clinical presentation. The treatment of chronic prostatitis has shifted from a goal of lowering prostate fluid leukocytes to a treatment paradigm that aims to improve symptoms. Since each patient’s symptoms are different, in the last two years, experts have emphasized individualized treatment of CP. Dr. Shoskes of the United States has proposed a new clinical typing of CP – the UPOINT system. uPOINT is a new diagnostic and treatment model that classifies prostatitis symptoms into six major types: urinary (urinary), psychosocial (psychosocial), autoimmune disease ( The six categories are: urinary, psychosocial, autoimmune (organ-specific), infection, neurologic/systemic, and pain and discomfort (tenderness). Some experts suggest Eerectile dysfunction as the seventh symptom, forming the UPOINT’E system. It is described as follows: Clinicians can develop treatment plans with significant individualization based on the patient’s different symptoms and possible causes. This individualized and significantly more effective treatment of prostatitis compared to traditional treatment methods is now causing a great deal of reaction in the international academic community.
