Can I square dance after breast cancer surgery?

Square dancing is allowed, but with the following caveats:

  • Combine work and rest, and dance in segments, with a 5-10 minute break for every 20-30 minutes of dancing.
  • Avoid high frequency single repetitive movements, such as: prolonged hand shaking.
  • Be sure to wear compression cuffs and palm sleeves for those at risk.

Self-awareness is required at all times during square dancing. The amount of exercise should be moderate so as not to feel fatigue or discomfort, and rest should be stopped promptly if discomfort such as heaviness, soreness, swelling, numbness, or pain occurs in the surgical area and the affected arm.
