Diabetics, are your feet ready for spring?

When spring arrives, it’s time to let your toes get some air from the dusty winter months. Sandal season is also just around the corner. Are diabetic feet ready?

If you have diabetes, you need to pay special attention to your ankles and toes. This condition can cause dry, chapped and peeling feet, as well as inflammation and ulcers on the feet that may go unnoticed because of nerve damage.

Before putting on open-toed shoes, learn how to acclimate your feet to the seasonal changes.

How often should I check my feet?

Feet should be carefully inspected daily. Cracks, cuts, sores, and blisters can suddenly appear on your feet. If you have nerve damage, you may not notice it until the affected area is infected. What should I do if I have difficulty observing the soles of my feet? Ask your partner to help you look, or use a mirror to see for yourself.

Where should I apply the lotion?

A thin layer of cream, lotion, or petroleum jelly should be applied daily to the back and bottom of the feet to keep the skin moist and soft. However, do not apply between the toes because moisture can promote fungal growth. Instead, sprinkle talcum powder or cornstarch between the toes to keep the area dry.

What is the best way to treat corns and calluses?

You should see a doctor. Corns and calluses are areas of thickened skin on the foot that can become damaged when they rub repeatedly against shoes. Do not try to cut or cauterize them yourself, as this can harm the skin and lead to infection. Contact your doctor and seek his or her advice.

How should I cut my toenail?

Toenails need to be trimmed flat and the edges smoothed with a file. This way, they can’t hurt the skin. If you have trouble trimming your toenails, follow your doctor’s advice.
