Elderly tumor patients should not give up treatment easily

Recently, an 84-year-old patient was admitted to the Department of Urology. The old man had recurrent hematuria for the past 3 years, but had not been treated formally. Three days before admission, the hematuria worsened, and then a blood clot filled the bladder and prevented him from urinating on his own, and the indwelling urinary catheter was soon blocked by the blood clot, causing him extreme pain. The hematocrit in the local hospital dropped to 71g/L and the creatinine rose to 205umol/L. The ultrasound examination indicated a 4cm×5cm×5cm mass in the bladder, which was considered difficult and risky to operate. The urology department made a detailed treatment plan for the old man and worked together with the anesthesiology department, the operation room and the blood transfusion department to perform emergency surgery overnight to remove the blood clot in the bladder and perform transurethral bladder tumor electrosurgery according to the condition with minimally invasive techniques. The old man recovered well after the operation and is now discharged from the hospital, and his family expressed their great gratitude. This is a typical case of a high-risk patient being successfully treated. It is also a case in which the condition was delayed. Due to the age, the patient and family members at the initial stage of hematuria thought that they were too old to take the risk to treat it. However, a disease like this will not directly endanger the patient’s life in a short time, but it will increase the patient’s suffering. If treated in time, the risk will be much smaller and the patient will suffer less from the disease. Three years after the disease had to be treated in the case of inability to urinate, the patient was still able to recover successfully. It shows that early treatment is very necessary. We would like to remind elderly patients and their families not to give up the opportunity of treatment easily because of their age and the risks involved. They should discuss with their doctors the most suitable treatment plan for the patient’s condition.
