What to do if your eardrum is perforated

Eardrum perforation is usually caused by inflammation or trauma. Inflammation is usually acute or chronic otitis externa or otitis media, while trauma is palm strike or ear gouging. There are usually several approaches that can be taken for perforated eardrums: If the perforation of the organism’s eardrum is caused by trauma and the wound is unclean with the possibility of infection, it is recommended to take antibiotics, which can be dispensed with if the wound is clean. If the perforated eardrum is caused by inflammation, it must be treated with antibiotics. Usually eardrum perforation is first treated conservatively with medication. After a period of time when the perforation does not heal with medication, surgery is required to repair the eardrum to avoid repeated infections and continued hearing loss. Nowadays, eardrum repair surgery is mostly performed under an endoscope, without external incision scars, which is less invasive and has a high success rate.
