Tympanoplasty – Indications and Contraindications

  Indications 1. Traumatic tympanic membrane perforation, large and long-lasting and without infection in the tympanic chamber.  2.Purulent otitis media followed by tympanic membrane perforation, with no infection in the ear and dry ear for 2-3 months. Recently, it is also believed that surgery can be performed in the ear for 1 month.  3.No infectious lesions in the nose and pharynx.  4. No inflammatory lesions on the skin of the external ear canal.  5. Good patency of the eustachian tube.  6. Hearing improvement on tympanic membrane perforation patch test, showing intact auditory chain.  Contraindications 1. If the eustachian tube is obstructed, the tympanic membrane repair will be complicated by plagiocephalic otitis media.  2. Hearing loss will be further reduced if the tympanic membrane is repaired.  3. Infected lesions in the tympanic chamber.  4.Epithelialization of the tympanic chamber mucosa should be removed first to avoid complications of cholesteatoma.
