Can’t stop taking antihypertensive drugs?

Whether you can stop taking antihypertensive medication depends on the type of hypertension. If it is primary hypertension, it is recommended that the medication not be stopped at will. If it is secondary hypertension, after removing the cause, if the blood pressure drops to normal, determine whether to discontinue the antihypertensive medication according to the opinion of the treating physician. Hypertension can be classified as mild, moderate or severe according to the level of blood pressure. Mild hypertension can be treated by methods such as lifestyle improvement, but moderate and severe hypertension require immediate initiation of drug therapy. Commonly used antihypertensive drugs include calcium antagonists, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor antagonists, diuretics, and beta-blockers. 1, diuretics: By promoting the production of urine, eliminating excess fluid in the blood, reducing the blood volume in the circulatory system and lowering blood pressure. Such as tachyphylaxis, dihydrochlorothiazide. 2, beta-blockers: by making the heart beat slowly, contraction force is reduced thus lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow. Such as metoprolol, bisoprolol. 3, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors: these drugs block the action of renin angiotensin, diastolic blood vessels, reduce water and sodium retention. Such as benazepril, lenopril, etc. 4, angiotensin II receptor blockers: through the inhibition of angiotensin receptors, play a similar role to angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. Such as valsartan, temisartan, etc. 5, calcium channel blockers: through the inhibition of calcium ions into the heart cells and muscle cells in the blood vessel wall to slow the heart rate, vasodilatation to reduce blood pressure. Such as amlodipine, nifedipine, etc. Although long-term use of antihypertensive drugs may have certain drug side effects, the impact of these side effects is very small compared to the benefits of lowering blood pressure and blocking damage to vital organs such as the heart, brain and kidneys. Moreover, even if side effects of a certain antihypertensive drug occur, other classes of drugs can be adjusted to continue controlling blood pressure. Therefore, do not discontinue antihypertensive medications at will.
