The cough of a child in the middle of the night should be identified as hot, cold and deficiency, mostly cold cough. If the child’s nighttime cough is accompanied by white and clear sputum, it is a cold cough; if it is accompanied by yellow and sticky sputum, large breath and dry stools, it is a hot cough. For cold cough, it is recommended to avoid eating cold foods and to use Chinese medicines to warm the lungs and disperse cold, such as Orange Red Phlegm Cough Liquid and Sanjiao Tablets. For wind-heat or hot cough, it is recommended to use heat-clearing herbs and dietary treatments, such as pear with rock sugar and Sichuan peel, or Chen Pi. In addition, nighttime cough is associated with wind evil, and generally more sensitive allergic cough or asthma often manifests nighttime attacks, which should be treated with wind-dispersing drugs on the basis of identification.
