For acne patients, impaired skin barrier function may lead to: increased transepidermal water loss and hyperkeratosis of the epidermis, which is conducive to acne formation; weakening of the skin’s ability to resist microorganisms, which aggravates acne inflammation; increased skin sensitivity and intolerance of patients to topical medications, which delays treatment. All of these conditions can make acne worse. Astringent lotions suitable for acne patients can inhibit excessive oil secretion from the skin, and their pH value is weakly acidic, which can regulate the pH value of the skin to facilitate the repair of the skin’s lipid film. Emollients can reduce transepidermal water loss, enhance the water content of the stratum corneum, and promote skin barrier repair. Moisturizing emollients have a certain protective effect on the skin barrier function, while the protective effect of acne-fighting emollients is not obvious, which may be related to some ingredients of acne-fighting products.
