What is meningioma and how is it treated?

Meningioma is a slow-growing tumor in the meninges and meningeal space, mostly benign, but malignant meningioma may also occur, and the detection rate is generally not high and clinical diagnosis is difficult. Treatment methods for meningioma include conservative treatment, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, etc. The treatment methods and clinical effects of different tumors are also different: 1.Conservative treatment: It is only applicable to benign meningioma patients with small tumors and no clinical symptoms. For most meningioma patients, surgery is the preferred treatment, especially for patients with large tumors, rapid growth or symptoms. Tumor resection includes total resection and subtotal resection, and the plan should be made according to the size and location of the meningioma. Generally, surgery for benign meningioma is more effective, but for malignant meningioma, surgery alone is not ideal, and adjuvant radiotherapy is needed. 3. Radiotherapy: including stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, volumetric rotation arc intensity-modulated radiotherapy, etc., can minimize damage to adjacent structures and increase the accuracy of radiation targeting. Usually used for malignant meningioma, adjuvant radiotherapy after surgery can also reduce the risk of meningioma recurrence; 4. Chemotherapy: Chemical drugs for meningioma include interferon alpha, hydroxyurea, growth inhibitors, plant extracts, etc. For example, interferon can help inhibit the growth of meningioma cells; hydroxyurea is a ribonucleic acid reductase inhibitor, which can stop the synthesis of deoxyribonucleotide in tumor cells, induce apoptosis of meningioma cells, inhibit the growth of tumor and cause the original tumor to become smaller, so as to achieve the effect of treating meningioma.
