Currently, 1 in 3 American adults has hypertension. People with hypertension are at significantly higher risk of stroke, heart disease and kidney failure. Hypertensive disorders have become the number one risk factor for death worldwide. Now, a new transcatheter interventional procedure that takes only 40 minutes to complete – renal denervation – is emerging as a new way to control intractable hypertension. The procedure improves blood pressure levels by destroying nerve fibers in the sympathetic nervous system of the kidney, and has shown promise in the treatment of chronic kidney disease, insulin resistance, and heart failure.
