How long to use mesalazine suppositories for proctitis

Generally, Mesalazine Suppositories are needed for more than two weeks to treat proctitis. Mesalazine suppositories are primarily used in the treatment of Crohn’s disease, ulcerative proctitis and ulcerative colitis for a period of time that may be adjusted according to the progress of the patient’s condition. Mesalazine, or 5-aminosalicylic acid, is the active ingredient in salicylic acid-based preparations for the treatment of ulcerative colorectitis, and has a significant inhibitory effect on inflammation of the intestinal wall. It inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, which causes inflammation, and the formation of the inflammatory mediator leukotriene. In addition, mesalazine inhibits lipoxygenase activity in neutrophils. Mild gastric symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite may occur with mesalazine and may also induce chronic hepatitis. It is contraindicated in hypersensitivity to salicylic acid preparations, gastric and duodenal ulcers; use with caution in hepatic insufficiency, children, advanced age, pregnancy and lactation, and bleeding disorders. Mesalazine suppositories should be used under the supervision of a doctor.
