What is oligospermia and hypospermia?

According to a survey by the World Health Organization, 15% of couples of childbearing age have problems with infertility, with 50% of the causes accounting for both men and women. With the increase of life stress, environmental pollution and lifestyle changes, male fertility is gradually declining. Oligozoospermia is one of the most common causes of male infertility. First of all, we need to understand what is oligozoospermia? Oligozoospermia is an infertility condition in which sperm density and motility are lower than normal. So, what is the normal value of density? The World Health Organization’s semen standard (4th edition) states that the sperm density of a man is not less than 20×106/ml per ejaculation, and if it is lower than 20×106/ml, it is called oligospermia. And the motility of sperm is divided into four levels: a, b, c and d. Level a and b are forward-moving sperm. Semen parameters with less than 50% forward-moving sperm (level a and b) or less than 25% sperm with level a motility are called weak spermatozoa. The causes of oligozoospermia in men include: systemic diseases, reproductive tract infections, endocrine abnormalities, injuries, surgery, immunity, varicocele, congenital abnormalities, drugs, physical and chemical environmental factors, etc. The treatment of oligozoospermia includes: general treatment: prohibit smoking, alcohol and less stimulating food, do not overexert yourself, regular work and rest; etiological treatment: symptomatic anti-inflammatory treatment, varicocele surgery, etc.; medication: anti-estrogen therapy, androgen therapy, gonadotropin therapy, nutritional support therapy, herbal medicine, etc. Since the cause of 40% of oligozoospermia is unknown and there is a lack of effective drug treatment, a large proportion of patients with oligozoospermia still cannot effectively improve semen quality after a large number of long-term drug treatments, especially for patients with mild to moderate oligozoospermia who can be assisted to conceive by husband insemination, and for patients with severe oligozoospermia who can be assisted to conceive by in vitro fertilization. In order to protect male fertility and have a healthy baby, before preparing for pregnancy, it is necessary to prohibit smoking, alcohol, avoid high temperature (sauna bath), sedentary, avoid exposure to harmful substances such as lead, cadmium, car exhaust, decoration materials, paint, etc., strengthen physical exercise, eat more vegetables and fruits, and ensure a balanced intake of various nutrients.
