Why do I keep getting drowsy during my period?

In Chinese medicine, there is a technical term for menstrual drowsiness – “cyclic hypersomnia”. Like primary dysmenorrhea, menstrual drowsiness is not a disease, but a normal physiological manifestation of menstruation. It can act as an “alarm clock” for menstruation, usually two or three days before menstruation, bringing women insurmountable sleepiness on time, even if you try to stay awake, but still after monotonous, quiet activities or eating, you can’t help but want to sleep. At this time, do not use coffee, tea or refreshing drugs as a lifesaver, as doing so is likely to lead to menstrual disorders, infertility and even many other diseases in women. There are three reasons why menstrual drowsiness is explained in Chinese medicine: spleen deficiency and dampness, lack of qi and blood or kidney essence deficiency. 1. Spleen deficiency and dampness. People with this type of drowsiness tend to be fat, have obvious swelling on the face, are anemic and usually have thin stools, heavy leucorrhea and heavy menstrual flow. Every time before the onset of menstruation began to appear drowsy bad condition, even if you wake up, also a weak limbs, heavy head and light feet sleepy look. 2. Insufficient qi and blood. Contrary to people with spleen deficiency and dampness, this type of person is thin. When menstruation comes, the face is yellowish and the heart beats faster, accompanied by a feeling of vertigo. The menstrual flow is small, light and thin, and the desire to sleep only during the menstrual period, especially after each meal is eaten, is especially pronounced. 3. Kidney essence deficiency. Most of the people with this type of drowsiness have experienced abortion, low menstrual volume, regular postponement of menstruation, and often suffer from tinnitus and deafness, trance, and weakness of the waist and knees during menstruation.
