”Microvascular decompression” is the best treatment for trigeminal neuralgia and facial spasm in the world. The Department of Neurosurgery of the Affiliated Hospital of the Armed Police Medical College is the first to carry out microvascular decompression surgery for trigeminal neuralgia, facial spasm and glossopharyngeal neuralgia in Tianjin. A presentation was made on how to better treat patients with trigeminal neuralgia and facial spasm and on issues related to microvascular decompression surgery. Microvascular decompression surgery for trigeminal neuralgia Trigeminal neuralgia is a painful neurological disease that occurs on one side of the face like discharge, pinprick or cut, and is called the “No. 1 pain in the world”. Trigeminal neuralgia can be treated with medication in the early stage, such as carbamazepine, which can temporarily relieve the pain, but cannot really treat the pain. For patients with long-term recurrent trigeminal neuralgia, they should actively seek a complete cure – microvascular decompression surgery. Microvascular decompression surgery is a method of microscopically pushing away the blood vessels located at the root of the trigeminal nerve that are abnormal and causing compression to the trigeminal nerve, and fixing them with special materials so that the blood vessels do not touch the trigeminal nerve, thus relieving the compression and restoring the normal function of the trigeminal nerve, thus completely eliminating the symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia. Due to the minimally invasive, safe and effective features of this technique, it has become the most effective treatment method for trigeminal neuralgia. The surgery is painless and the whole operation is done under a microscope, which ensures the fineness and safety of the surgery. The treatment of facial muscle spasm is mainly manifested as episodic and rhythmic involuntary jerking of one side of the facial muscles. The main pathology is the compression of the facial nerve by the abnormal vascularization and the stimulation of the facial nerve, resulting in abnormal nerve impulses, leading to facial muscle twitching. Facial muscle twitching starts from one eyelid and gradually spreads to the face. The twitching is intermittent at the beginning and becomes frequent gradually, especially when the facial muscle twitching is obvious during emotional stress and fatigue. When the twitching is severe, it affects vision, speech and sleep. There is no specific medication for facial muscle spasm. Microvascular decompression is the only treatment method that can completely cure facial muscle spasm. The procedure is performed by pushing away the blood vessels located at the root of the facial nerve with abnormal alignment and causing compression to the facial nerve under the operating microscope, and fixing them with special materials so that the blood vessels do not touch the facial nerve, thus releasing its compression and restoring the normal function of the facial nerve, so that the symptoms of facial muscle twitching can be relieved. This technique is the most effective treatment for facial muscle spasm because of its minimally invasive, high safety, significant effect and low recurrence rate.
