Dietary recommendations for gastrointestinal flu

Gastrointestinal colds generally refer to disorders of gastrointestinal function caused by the common cold. Patients can increase their intake of vitamin-rich (e.g. cabbage, kiwi), high-protein (beef, eggs, milk) foods in moderation during the onset of the illness. Patients with severe vomiting and diarrhoea can drink light salt water in moderation to avoid electrolyte imbalance. Food should be as warm, soft and easily digestible as possible, and in severe cases a semi-liquid or liquid diet may be chosen. It is important to note that diet is only one part of the treatment and the severity of the disease varies from patient to patient, so it is advisable to seek medical advice if you are unwell. Your doctor will be able to advise you on the appropriate treatment plan for your particular case, as well as giving you sound dietary advice.
