Dietary contraindications for gastrointestinal flu

Gastrointestinal colds are generally referred to as disorders of gastrointestinal function caused by the common cold. Patients are advised to avoid irritating foods with a high fat content during the onset of the illness. Foods that are highly irritating include onions, fennel, garlic and ginger, as well as some spices such as pepper and peppercorns. Foods high in fat include fatty meats and butter. In addition, patients often experience discomfort such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, and are advised not to consume foods that are cold and raw. It is important to note that diet is only one part of the treatment and the severity of the disease varies from patient to patient, so it is advisable to seek medical advice if you are unwell. Your doctor will be able to advise you on the appropriate treatment plan for your particular case and give you sound dietary advice.
