Pain in the sternum may be caused by a fracture of the patient’s sternum or by costochondritis around the painful area. If there is a localised purulent infection, this may also cause the patient to experience sternal pain. In some cases, patients with tumour lesions that have metastasised to the sternal area may also experience pain.
