A new study published in the monthly journal Circulation suggests that drinking three to five cups of coffee a day may help you live longer. Scientists have found that moderate coffee consumption reduces the risk of premature death due to heart disease, neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s and type 2 diabetes, and drinking coffee also appears to reduce the risk of suicide. Of course, it is thought that this characteristic is not related to the amount of caffeine contained, but to other plant compounds contained in coffee. Ming Ding, a scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, who led the study, said: “Coffee contains bioactive substances that can reduce the body’s insulin resistance and inflammatory response. Of course, such a conclusion requires further research.” The findings bring together three studies with a total of 208,501 male and female subjects participating in these experiments. The researchers assessed the effects of coffee drinking using an analysis of dietary questionnaires every four years for 30 years. The results found that moderate coffee consumption significantly reduced the risk of death from all causes when compared to those who drank less or no coffee. This was of course after taking full account of other factors such as smoking, body mass index, level of physical activity, alcohol consumption and daily dietary habits. “This study provides further evidence that moderate coffee consumption may be beneficial to health and may reduce the risk of premature death from a variety of diseases,” said Prof. B.C. Hu, a scientist at the Chan Tsang Hee School of Public Health. But Emily, chief nurse at the British Heart Foundation. Reeve says “what really matters if you want to keep your heart healthy is maintaining a healthy lifestyle, not how much coffee you drink”. Author’s tip: Drinking coffee still depends on the person, not everyone is suitable for drinking. If you have heart disease, arrhythmia, asthma, anxiety, hyperthyroidism, insomnia and other patients is not suitable for a large number of drinking.
