With the change of lifestyle and educational pressure in modern society, the incidence of myopia among primary and secondary school students in China remains high and has become a hot issue that seriously affects the quality of the nation. As there are still many problems in the prevention and control of myopia, there are many different “methods” and many unscrupulous clinics, centers or hospitals under the guise of “curing myopia with Chinese medicine” are also popular, scraping money from parents’ pockets by the thousands at every turn. The money is being scraped from parents’ pockets by the thousands, while delaying the children’s condition and even causing a rapid increase in myopia! As an optometry center of a national tertiary hospital, as a regular army of TCM practitioners, and as a group with a conscience and a sense of social responsibility, we call on everyone to keep their eyes open, not to be attracted by false propaganda, and not to believe in the fantasy of “TCM cures myopia”! There are two main pathological changes in myopia, one is the elongation of the eye axis, that is, the length of the front and back of the eye becomes longer; the other is the increase in the refractive index, mostly due to high corneal curvature (the cornea is relatively more curved), or an increase in the density of the lens. There is no other way to change or treat these factors, including Chinese medicine, except for myopia surgery, which can change the refractive state of the eye. So-called pseudomyopia, which is caused by prolonged near vision and regulatory tension, is reversible through medication to dilate the pupil or by paying attention to eye hygiene (although most of it will eventually become true myopia). For myopia control, the key is to pay attention to eye hygiene, reduce the eye burden, medical optometry and reasonable prescription glasses! Chinese medicine has obvious advantages for myopia prevention and control, but the focus of Chinese medicine and other auxiliary methods is to prevent the emergence of myopia or delay the rapid increase of the existing myopia. No method, including TCM, can cure existing myopia (as determined by medical optometry)! Some unethical practitioners, under the guise that TCM can cure myopia, cater to parents’ reluctance to let their children wear glasses, and make thousands and thousands of dollars through what they call a course of treatment! As these unethical physicians often tell parents that if they are nearsighted, they should take Chinese medicine and not wear glasses, which leads to a rapid increase in the myopia of the child! This is extremely harmful! Chinese medicine to cure myopia, Chinese medicine to remove glasses, the wish is very good, the foolishness is too bizarre! Where have the “relevant departments” gone at this time? Don’t rape Chinese medicine! As the regular army of TCM, we call on the “relevant departments” to strengthen management, the media to appeal widely, and parents to remain rational, so as not to delay the next generation of flowers! We also emphasize once again that the real role of TCM for youth myopia is “prevention” and “control”, to prevent the onset and control the development!
