Many years ago, I met an old lady who told me with conviction that she had cured her high blood pressure through a secret recipe she had created. I was curious, so I asked what was the secret formula that worked so well. The old lady mysteriously told me that she boiled banana peels and ate them every day. Recently, I met a male patient who had high blood pressure for many years in the clinic, claiming that he had bought a great laser therapy device and the results were remarkable. I always like to get to the bottom of things, so I wanted to find out what this device did, and whether the two antihypertensive drugs he had been taking could be reduced or stopped. When I heard this question, he shook his head: antihypertensive drugs can not be reduced, about the therapeutic effect, the therapeutic instrument’s manual speaks very clearly. After listening to his answer, I understand, I can’t help but laugh dumbly. Hypertension is a chronic disease, but also a long-term or lifelong problem, who all hope to cure it. But at the present level of medical science, there is no definite method that can really cure hypertension. In fact, hypertension includes the following two concepts: primary hypertension and secondary hypertension. Primary hypertension is also called “hypertensive disease”, because its cause is influenced by genetics, age, social environment, lifestyle and other factors, and it is difficult to find an exact cause that can be removed, so a cure is almost impossible. In the latter case, the elevated blood pressure is secondary to a specific disease, that is, if the cause of the elevated blood pressure can be found (such as pheochromocytoma, hyperthyroidism, large blood vessel stenosis, etc.), and once these causes can be removed, the hypertension will be cured. Generally speaking, primary hypertension accounts for about 90% of cases, while secondary hypertension accounts for only 10%. Usually, a person’s blood pressure is affected by diet, emotions, and seasons, and sometimes fluctuates, and it is common for it to remain at a normal level even for a period of time, just as some people have normal blood pressure in the summer, and then rise again once winter comes. Analyze why the blood pressure of patients who ate banana peel was normal: because banana is rich in potassium, potassium-rich diet itself is conducive to lowering blood pressure, which is the opposite of high salt diet that tends to cause blood pressure to rise. Therefore, it is understandable that the blood pressure drops or becomes normal for a period of time after eating boiled banana peel, but of course, this should not talk about curing high blood pressure. When people are quiet, especially when they close their eyes, their blood pressure will generally drop to some extent, and most of the various therapeutic devices that claim to be able to lower blood pressure also take advantage of this placebo-like effect to mislead consumers. Only by conducting in-depth research on the complex etiology of primary hypertension will it be possible to master more techniques to control hypertension at its root in the future. Renal sympathectomy and carotid sinus pacing, which are currently being studied by the medical community, have made some achievements, but are still in the research stage. Once the technology is mature, it is expected to be able to control blood pressure for a long period of time; and a hypertension vaccine, if successfully developed, is expected to control blood pressure for several months with a single shot of the vaccine.
