Not all cancers are cachectic. Cachexia usually occurs in the late or terminal stages of tumours, when patients experience extreme wasting, loss of appetite and multi-organ failure. Cachexia does not occur in the early stages of the tumour if its progression has been controlled or cured by aggressive treatment.
In addition, some severe chronic infectious diseases can also present with cachexia.
