Tumors in children are often found too late

According to the survey data of China Anti-Cancer Association, as infectious diseases are effectively curbed, malignant tumor has ranked second among the causes of death of children under 14 years old in China, second only to accidental death. More and more budding children are being haunted by tumors, which symbolize “death killers”, at an early stage. The doctor reminded that if you have persistent low fever, swollen lymph nodes and palpable lumps, you should bring your child to the doctor in time. Early detection and treatment, 70% of children with tumors can be cured. When children with malignant tumors are found, they are often in advanced stage. For more than a month, 9-year-old Tong Tong always had low fever, and the doctor in the village clinic diagnosed him as having a cold, but after treating him for more than 10 days, his condition got better and worse. The doctor suggested that the parents take the child to a major hospital in the city for a checkup, and a blood test showed that it was leukemia. “The incidence of childhood tumors, especially leukemia, has increased significantly in the past 5 to 10 years. In addition to genetic factors, the increasing number of childhood tumors may be related to renovation, atmospheric pollution, food safety and so on.” Wang Xige, chief physician of pediatric internal medicine and pediatric hematologist at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zheng University, said. “At present, there are 12 children with malignant tumors for every 1 million children, and 30,000 children are diagnosed with malignant tumors every year nationwide. In our department alone, we do at least 2 to 3 cases of malignant tumor surgery in children a week.” However, what worries Hou Guangjun, chief physician of pediatric surgery at Zhengzhou Children’s Hospital, is that these children with malignant tumors are often in advanced stages once they are discovered. The reason why children’s tumors are often found late? Chen Qi, chief physician of pediatric surgery of Zheng University Third Affiliated Hospital, analyzed that children do not have regular annual health checkups like adults, plus they are less able to tell their conditions and less sensitive to pain than adults. Therefore, it often requires parents to carefully observe their children to discover, for example, smaller abdominal lumps, which are mostly discovered by chance when parents bathe or sleep and stroke their children. Because of this, Hou Guangjun and Wang Xige remind parents to be highly alert to the following symptoms in their children: 1. persistent low fever. General cold, pneumonia fever, a few days will be fine. However, if the fever of unknown origin persists for more than 1 week, especially if the antiviral and antibiotic treatment is ineffective, you should consult a doctor early. 2. Swollen lymph nodes. If the swollen lymph nodes do not go down for a long time, there are many lymph nodes in the neck, or the lymph nodes increase in size for a short time, be alert to the possibility of tumor. 3.Palpable lumps. Once a lump is found in the child’s neck, armpit, groin, abdomen, back waist, etc., the cause must be identified. Parents are advised to touch their children’s whole body after they go to sleep. If the lumps are soft and flat, there is no problem, but be careful when you feel lumps or hard lumps. 4. Pain. Longer-term persistent or intermittent pain, such as headache, abdominal pain, joint pain, etc., if necessary, take pictures for examination. 5.Abdominal distension and vomiting. Intestinal tumor may cause intestinal obstruction, resulting in bloating, vomiting and other gastrointestinal symptoms. 6.Eye proptosis and eye pain. Some tumors in the eye may cause eye discomfort. 7. Anemia and bleeding. There are unexplained pallor or bleeding, including bleeding gums, bleeding spots or petechiae on the skin, and blood tests can be done to rule out leukemia, etc. In addition, Chen Qi suggests parents to take their children for regular medical checkups, at least ultrasound, routine blood and urine tests are indispensable. Although tumors are very dangerous, if treated early, the prognosis of children’s tumors is to some extent better than adult tumors, and their overall cure rate can reach more than 70%. Hou Guangjun once saw a 2-year-old child with bladder cancer, who had nearly half of his bladder removed by surgery, and the lesion was completely removed, then combined with chemotherapy and traditional Chinese medicine. Why is the prognosis of childhood tumor so good? Firstly, children have immature psychological development, so they are not as much psychological burden as adults when treating tumors; secondly, most tumors in children originate from mesodermal or mesenchymal tissue cells, which are developed from immature embryonic tissues and are relatively more sensitive to chemotherapy. In addition, children are in the growth and development period, and their bodies recover quickly after surgery and chemotherapy. However, the current clinical diagnosis and treatment of children’s tumors is not as good as it is said to be. In addition to untimely detection, Chen Qi believes that this is not unrelated to the misconceptions of some parents. For example, some parents think that children’s resistance is poor and surgery and chemotherapy have to be done when children are older; some parents think that benign tumors do not affect children’s eating and drinking and playing, so they do not treat them early; some are afraid that children’s brain development will be affected by general anesthesia surgery. “In fact, early treatment of malignant tumors, the lesions may not have metastasized, surgery to remove them clean, combined with the necessary chemotherapy, the effect will be very good; a few years later, children’s tumors develop quickly, may have spread to other parts, surgery can not remove all the lesions, the efficacy is bound to be discounted.” Chen Qi said that even benign tumors that people feel are not a big problem, some of them will degenerate as children grow older. In the case of sacrococcygeal teratoma, 70% are benign and 30% are malignant before the age of one, but after the age of one, it is exactly the opposite, 30% are benign and 70% are malignant. The tumors in children are mostly congenital and pregnant mothers should pay special attention to the increasing number of children with tumors, how to prevent them? “Childhood tumors are mostly congenital and the cause is unknown, but considered to be related to genetics, viruses, chemical substances, radioactivity and immune deficiencies, especially the poor lifestyle of pregnant women and the pollution of the environment they are in, also have some influence.” In this regard, Hou Guangjun recommended pregnant mothers to do well: 1, from 3 months before pregnancy, not long-term exposure to carcinogenic pollution, avoid exposure to electromagnetic radiation, radiation and decoration pollution with harmful toxic substances such as benzene and formaldehyde. 2.Minimize illness, reduce infections and unnecessary medication. 3.Rational diet, ensure the intake of essential protein and vitamins. 4.Prohibit alcohol, hair dyes, sex hormones, etc. In addition, for children, developing good diet and living habits from childhood and staying away from polluted environment will not only help to prevent childhood tumors, but also avoid long-term adverse stimulation to increase the risk of adult tumors later. Firstly, to develop good dietary habits from childhood. It is advisable to have a high protein, low fat and high fiber diet, such as milk, eggs, lean meat, seafood, vegetables, fruits and coarse grains, etc.; high fat and high calorie foods such as fried and fatty meat should be eaten less; do not eat pickled and smoked foods (which may contain carcinogens such as nitrite); reduce snacks such as sugar, ice cream, carbonated drinks, puffed foods and instant noodles; once children have partial and picky eating, they can be encouraged by The first thing is to make sure that your child is not eating too much food. Second, adhere to exercise to improve immunity, while avoiding obesity. Third, house decoration as simple as possible. Choose environmentally friendly materials; do not immediately move into the new room after renovation, it is best to open the windows for two or three months. Fourth, avoid unnecessary radiological examinations and drug abuse. Fifth, minors under 18 years of age can not smoke, families with children, public places to reduce the “second-hand smoke” hazard.
