Can playing mahjong, playing cards, playing sweaters, typing, or doing crafts cause lymphedema?

People at high risk for lymphedema may be at risk of developing lymphedema by performing single, repetitive, high-frequency movements for long periods of time.

For such movements, it is recommended that:

  1. People at high risk wear appropriate compression cuffs and palm sleeves prior to manipulation.
  2. Perform in segments, e.g., rest for about 10 minutes after 20-30 minutes of manipulation before continuing.
  3. Take care to protect your hands from injury when doing manuals.
  4. Take care of your self-awareness during the operation and stop immediately if you experience any discomfort such as soreness, pain, numbness, rising or heaviness.
