Why can’t you smoke when you have a fracture?

Patients with fractures are strictly forbidden to smoke during treatment. This is because smoking may have the following effects on fracture healing: 1) Smoking may increase the inflammatory mediators in the body, which may aggravate the pain and swelling of the fracture; 2) Smoking may directly cause delayed healing or even non-healing of the fracture; 3) Smoking may cause spasm of the blood vessels in the body, which may lead to poor blood supply to the fracture site, which may be detrimental to fracture recovery. In addition to smoking, patients with fractures should also avoid drinking alcohol or beverages such as strong tea or coffee, which is similar to smoking.
