Causes of dry eye and the people who are prone to it

With the dry climate in autumn and winter, the number of patients with dry eye disease has suddenly increased. With the progress of society, the development of technology and the improvement of people’s living standards, mobile devices such as iPhone and iPad are becoming more and more common, and middle-aged and young people are more likely to suffer from dry eye due to long-term gaze at the electronic display screens of these mobile devices. Clinically, the number of dry eye patients has increased nearly 20 times compared to that of more than 10 years ago, and the number has changed from mainly elderly people in the past to mainly middle-aged and young people nowadays. In addition to environmental factors, the surge in dry eye is directly related to the prolonged use of computers, cell phones and other electronic products, which leads to excessive eye use. What is dry eye? Dry eye syndrome is a disease in which the protective layer of the eye surface, the “tear fluid”, is not secreted in sufficient amounts or is unevenly distributed or excessively evaporated, causing the surface of the eye to dry out. Its main manifestations are: dry eyes, difficulty in opening, photophobia, burning, and inability to see for a long time, or accompanied by eye swelling and pain, dizziness, fatigue and other symptoms. Why does it cause dry eye? To use an analogy, when people look at something, their eyelids are blinking regularly, just like the wipers of a car, uninterruptedly coating the cornea and conjunctiva with tears evenly, which not only serves as a lubricant, but also brushes away metabolic waste or foreign dust on the surface at the same time to protect the eyes. Under normal circumstances, the human eye can blink 20 times per minute, but the number of blinks decreases if the person is focused on something or anything. Some previous studies have reported that the number of blinks is reduced to about 7 times a minute. And playing games with mobile devices is one of the reasons. With mobile devices like this, the screen is smaller and the user is more focused on what is on the screen, so this highly concentrated use of the eyes can easily interfere with the normal work of the tear film, which protects the lubricating substance in the eye. Who is prone to dry eye? The first group is the elderly. Seventy-five percent of people over the age of 65 suffer from dry eye. Dry eyes originally occurred mainly in the elderly, whose tear production decreases with age, and is mainly attributed in Chinese medicine to a lack of liver and kidney, a deficiency of yin and blood, and an inability to nourish the eyes. The second group is women. Women who are menopausal, pregnant, lactating and taking oral contraceptives can have dry eye symptoms due to changes in hormone levels; certain patients such as those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid disease, dry syndrome, lupus erythematosus, etc. are also prone to dry eye. The third category is the incidence of young and middle-aged people is on the rise year by year. For the special working and living habits of young people, dry eye has another name – video terminal syndrome. Especially nowadays, the popular e-books and computer games have contributed to the high incidence of dry eye syndrome.
