What is an endometriosis cyst?

Endometriosis cysts are cysts that form when the endometrium becomes ectopic and grows within the ovaries, also known as ovarian chocolate cysts.
Ovarian chocolate cysts are formed when ectopic endometrium grows inside the ovary and bleeds with the menstrual cycle, forming cysts in which there is a stale accumulation of blood. The contents of the cyst are usually coffee-colored, thick and chocolate-like, hence the common name “ovarian chocolate cyst”.
Patients may suffer from dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, increased menstrual flow, prolonged menstrual period and infertility. They can be treated with medication or surgery, such as low-dose high-potency progesterone and ethinyl estradiol combination, or laparoscopic removal.
Patients who have been diagnosed with ovarian chocolate cysts are advised to cooperate with doctors for active treatment to prevent further development of the condition.
