Chronic urticaria can heal itself but not be cured

Chronic urticaria is a very common disease that seriously disturbs the health of patients. Proper understanding of the nature of the disease and finding a reasonable treatment is an important guarantee to improve the quality of life of patients. The problem is that many patients and even doctors lack sufficient understanding of the disease, with divergent interpretations, and struggle to find various means of cure, resulting in unnecessary mental and economic burdens and even physical damage to patients. 1, the pursuit of chronic urticaria root treatment is very difficult Many patients run to large hospitals, looking for large experts, most of them want to find “root treatment” method, hoping that after treatment never recur, which is the medical term “cure”. However, it is important to know that the cause of chronic urticaria is complex and ambiguous, and many factors are involved in the development of the disease. In most cases, it is difficult to find a clear cause or trigger, so there is a lack of treatment for the cause, and it is obvious that it is not possible to “cut off the root”. Many hospitals carry out allergen tests, but the results of these tests are only meaningful to exclude allergic factors, but the positive results are not important, what is important is whether these positive results are closely related to the onset of the disease, in fact, most of them are not related. It is clear from foreign studies and my personal clinical experience that it is difficult to explain the onset of chronic urticaria in terms of allergens. Others, such as infections and medications, also lack very reliable evidence to prove that there must be an association with the onset of a particular patient. In fact, if a patient with chronic urticaria is quite sure of the cause of its onset, it is often not urticaria. Therefore, at least at present, there is a lack of clear and effective treatment for the cause of the disease, so the pursuit of “root cause” treatment, that is, cure therapy is very difficult. The chronic urticaria course is self-limiting. The absence of a reliable “root-cause” treatment is not the same as being plagued by the disease for the rest of your life. A large sample of foreign and our research confirms that chronic urticaria can remit on its own, and even no longer recur, that is, self-healing. The time to self-remission (or the course of the disease as we say in medicine) varies from one type of urticaria to another and from one condition of urticaria to another. For example, patients with skin scarring, positive autologous serum test (a special autoimmune method used to detect chronic urticaria, which is carried out in many hospitals, including Southwest Hospital), and more severe conditions usually have a longer disease duration, mostly 1-2 years or even 2-10 years, and about 1% of patients may have episodes lasting more than 10 years. Therefore, many patients get better on their own after 1-2 years, a condition that is not changed by drugs. At least so far, there is no treatment that can definitely shorten the duration of the disease. 3, chronic urticaria using antihistamines is a realistic treatment Chronic urticaria etiology is very difficult to treat, basically symptomatic treatment. The so-called “desensitization” treatment or immunotherapy is not clearly effective, treatment to antihistamines as the basic treatment. Patients are often concerned about the side effects of medications, but in fact second-generation antihistamines (the drugs usually chosen by clinicians) are very safe, and the side effects of these drugs are much less than those of antihypertensives and antidiabetics, and they are usually taken for only 3-6 months, rarely for longer. Anti-hypertensives or anti-diabetics are usually taken for life, and even more and more of the drug is taken, while antihistamines can usually be reduced in variety or reduced in maintenance once they take effect, so why are many patients concerned about the side effects of antihistamines? Obviously it is not necessary. Therefore, patients should think with their doctors that the current status of treatment is to choose antihistamines as a realistic treatment for chronic urticaria, follow medical advice and adhere to the rules of medication. By the way, chronic urticaria should not be easily treated with hormonal drugs, which have many side effects and are more likely to recur and be more difficult to treat after discontinuing the medication. In short, chronic urticaria can heal itself, but it is not curable. Do not seek medical help blindly, but use antihistamines reasonably and regularly is a realistic treatment.
