Malignant tumor is one of the serious diseases that endanger human health, and the annual number of cancer cases in China is about 1.7 million, which is overtaking cardiovascular disease as the first cause of death. The annual death of cancer patients in China reaches 1.5 million in recent years the incidence of cancer is still rising. Although the level of diagnostic technology of symptomatic disease has developed greatly, the treatment mainly relies on surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, three major means, all of which have certain limitations. Under the rapid development of contemporary technology, people have made remarkable achievements in the research of tumor thermotherapy in the past 20 years, which has played an important role in the comprehensive treatment of tumor. Tumor thermotherapy has become a new “green therapy” for tumor treatment after surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Tumor heat therapy has a long history as a kind of Chinese therapy, the earliest one can be traced back to 5000 B.C. It is said that a doctor named Edwin Smith in the artery had used heat to treat breast swelling in his manuscript. Legend has it that Hippocrates, a famous ancient Greek physician, used heat to treat tumors when he had the motto: “What cannot be cured by medicine can be cured by surgery, what cannot be cured by surgery can be cured by heat, and what cannot be cured by heat is indeed incurable.” In 1884, Bruns reported that a late-stage melanoma infected with dengue had a fever of 40, and the tumor disappeared after a few days and survived for 8 years. Later, people began to use human-made bacterial infection or injection of chemical pyrogen to make patients high fever, the most famous is Coley 1893 repeatedly published articles, using artificial infection method to induce fever 38 – 42 reported 38 cases of advanced cancer, 12 cases cured, aroused great interest. 19th century German scholars have more heat therapy literature reports. At that time, the heating technology was rudimentary, and even directly used fire needles and small red-hot irons to burn and scald the swelling on the body surface, and also used backward methods such as soaking the limbs in hot water and heating with hot water local infusion. With the application of electric knife, the 19th century to Westermsrk first use of radiofrequency coils as radiators for cervical cancer heat therapy. After World War II, microwave technology developed rapidly, and a more systematic study of the heating technology of electromagnetic wave thermotherapy was conducted in the 1960s. Despite the long history of thermal therapy, the development of thermal therapy was limited by the underdeveloped science and technology at that time and the backward equipment of heating methods. Until the seventies, due to the intervention and cooperation of multidisciplinary to make a lot of basic and clinical research, gradually formed its own discipline system —- modern tumor thermotherapy, become an emerging discipline by oncology, bio-thermology, physical thermology, electromechanical disciplines and electronic computers and other high-tech interwoven combination as one. In recent years, Europe, America, Russia and other countries have carried out many researches on tumor thermotherapy, which show that thermotherapy is really effective for malignant tumors. The 7th International Conference on Tumor Thermotherapy was held in Rome in 1996, and scholars from various countries have conducted extensive academic exchanges in tumor thermotherapy. In 1980, the first National Conference on Tumor Thermotherapy was held in China, and it has been held for seven times since then. The eighth National Conference on Tumor Thermotherapy will be held this year. The national (8th Five-Year Plan) medical science and technology research project on tumor thermotherapy has won a bid. It shows that tumor thermotherapy has been accepted by the medical profession in China as an effective means to treat tumors. At present, there are microwave thermotherapy, ultrasonic focused thermotherapy, radiofrequency thermotherapy and the latest generation of endogenous field thermotherapy in China. Microwave, because of its shallow penetration depth, can only be used for superficial heating and is mostly used for superficial tumors. However, due to the limitation of ultrasonic wave itself, it cannot penetrate tissues containing gas and bones, so it cannot treat lung cancer in chest, esophageal cancer, liver cancer blocked by ribs, and ultrasonic wave must rely on water as a mediator, and the body surface of human tumor parts must contact with water to penetrate ultrasonic wave. Therefore, the patient’s body position is greatly restricted, and the treatment cost is high. Radiofrequency thermotherapy can also heat deep tumors, but it requires water to cool the local area, and the subcutaneous fat is prone to overheating and pain, causing hard nodes, and it is also more difficult to operate. The latest generation of endogenous field heat therapy system concentrates the advantages of various types of heat therapy machines at home and abroad, which does not require water cooling and is safe and comfortable for patients in lying position, and can treat deep tumors in chest, abdomen and pelvis, etc., with remarkable efficacy and greatly improves the quality of life of patients. Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Oriental Hospital, Oncology Department Heat Therapy Center has introduced this set of endogenous field heat therapy system, which is well received by patients. The treatment of tumor must be comprehensive, not only rely on a single kind of treatment, surgery, radiotherapy, heat therapy are all local treatment. It is more effective if it can be combined with systemic treatment such as chemotherapy and traditional Chinese medicine. Because tumor cancer is a systemic disease, when the local tumor grows to 1 cubic centimeter, the whole body already has microscopic cancer metastasis visible to the naked eye. Even if the tumor is surgically removed or treated with radiotherapy or thermotherapy, it still needs to be combined with systemic drugs to kill the residual cancer in the body so that it cannot leave a scourge in a certain part of the body to metastasize and recur. Because heat therapy is not a radical means, it should be combined with systemic chemotherapy or Chinese herbal medicine to improve the efficacy several times or even tens of times. The dose of drugs at this time is only 1/3 and 1/2 of the usual amount, so the toxic side effects of drugs are greatly reduced, while the treatment effect is obviously improved, and patients are happy to accept such treatment, which greatly improves the quality of life of patients and provides cancer patients with a new hope.
