If you already have a torn ankle ligament it must be surgically repaired to tighten the ankle joint to prevent further sprains. There are two main ligaments that need to be repaired and tightened. We use two methods to reconstruct the ankle ligaments. One method, called the modified Brostrum procedure, involves making an incision in the ankle joint and using a small metal anchor nail to attach and tighten the two tendons to the fibula. Another method is to take an autologous tendon and implant it through a small percutaneous incision. We call this “percutaneous small incision ankle ligament reconstruction”. You will need crutches for ten days to two weeks after surgery. After two weeks you will be able to walk in a removable boot. This boot should be worn for 4 to 6 weeks, after which you will wear a shoe with a functional ankle support for 4 weeks or more. You will be able to wear the brace for functional exercises 6 weeks after surgery. Physical therapy is important for recovery. You can do exercises such as running 3 to 4 months after surgery. After surgery, you need to go to the laboratory for plantar pressure measurement to make insoles and use them for 1 to 2 months.
