Leg numbness due to a herniated lumbar disc is mostly due to nerve root compression. This numbness can be treated with appropriate medication to reduce the edema of the nerve root. If the symptoms are not relieved, physical examination and imaging are needed to understand the extent of the patient’s lumbar disc herniation and to consider whether to treat it surgically.
