Patients with tuberculosis are more concerned about when their lesions will calcify, and in everyday conversation, people see calcification as a sign that their tuberculosis is cured. What is calcification all about? Normal lung tissue is made up of alveoli, lymphatic microvessels, and fine bronchi, and is pink in color. If a significant number of virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria invade the lung tissue and grow and multiply in it, producing metabolites, the lung tissue is damaged and a substance like spoiled cheese appears, causing the normal structure and physiological functions to disappear. This is medically known as caseous necrosis. The necrotic material is acidic, not easily liquefied and absorbed, and can persist for a long time. When the body is resistant, or after chemotherapy, the metabolism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the cheese-like lesion is depressed, the ability to reproduce is weakened, the lesion loses water and dries out, and calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate are absent to form calcification. It usually takes more than 1-3 years to see the calcification of the lesion on a chest X-ray. The speed of calcification of lung structure lesions is very much related to age. In adults, the process of calcification of pulmonary tuberculosis is slow, often taking several years, and calcification is often inadequate. Calcification of the lesion is one of the forms of TB healing, and can be completely absorbed without leaving a trace on the radiograph if the lesion is mild, detected early, and treated promptly. Or only a small scarred lesion remains. Most adults with TB are replaced by fibrous tissue hyperplasia, which appears as dense nodules and cords on radiographs, so calcification is not the only form of TB healing. Some patients ask if taking more cod liver oil and calcium tablets can speed up the calcification of pulmonary tuberculosis? Cod liver oil is a fat-soluble vitamin AD, and its need with calcium depends mainly on calcium and phosphorus metabolism in human body. People with normal nutrition and normal diet do not need to take calcium tablets and cod liver oil frequently. In recent years, some doctors believe that cod liver oil and calcium tablets are not clinically effective in promoting calcification of tuberculosis. Modern chemotherapy for tuberculosis does not emphasize taking cod liver oil and calcium tablets.
