The causes of swollen vulva are multifaceted. The first thing to look out for is whether you are pregnant, as oedema of the vulva can occur during normal pregnancy; swelling of the vulva can occur after vaginal birth due to the pressure of the birth process. Swelling may also occur if there is a recent local injury to the vulva. If there is localised itching, pain and abnormal discharge it may be inflammation of the vulva and vagina, and if there is a swelling it may be a vestibular gland cyst, vulvar boil or vulvar tumour. The exact cause needs to be confirmed by combining symptoms, signs and ancillary tests.
