Causes of death from AIDS

The majority of deaths from AIDS are due to opportunistic infections. The most common opportunistic infection is Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, which causes chest tightness and cough with fever. Most of the cough symptoms are not very severe, but the chest tightness may worsen progressively and even respiratory failure may occur. There are many other opportunistic infections in AIDS patients, such as cryptococcal meningitis and tumors, which are the causes of death from AIDS. Therefore, the cause of death from AIDS needs to be determined by the specific condition of the patient. Most patients with AIDS are relatively stable if treated early. Opportunistic infections occur in AIDS mainly due to low immune function and reduced CD4 cell counts. Therefore, with early antiviral treatment, the patient’s CD4 cells will gradually increase, the number of HIV cells will gradually decrease, and the patient’s condition will be stable.
