The “untimely bomb” in the body – aortic coarctation

Aortic coarctation is a disease that occurs in the aorta, the large artery of the human body. The wall of the human aorta can be divided into three layers of structures: the inner membrane, the middle membrane, and the outer membrane, and in normal people these three layers are closely fitted and together they carry the blood flow through. In patients with aortic coarctation, due to cystic necrosis of the middle layer and damaged fibers, the arterial wall loses elasticity and cannot withstand the pressure of high-speed blood flow, which gradually expands and separates over time, forming a real and a false cavity, and blood flow continues to seep into the false cavity through the endothelial rupture. Aortic coarctation is a very dangerous disease of the large blood vessels, and it is called the “whirlwind killer” by the medical profession because of its rapid onset and high sudden death rate. The mortality rate in the acute phase (the first 48 to 72 hours of onset) is about 50% to 60%, within one week the mortality rate is up to 70%, and within one month the mortality rate is more than 90%. Hypertensive patients with acute chest pain should be alert to aortic coarctation Aortic coarctation is like an “untimely bomb” hidden in the body. Because of its rapid onset and serious vascular damage, which determines the high risk of surgery, in the past, due to the limitations of medical conditions, the mortality rate has been high, but nowadays, cardiovascular surgeons with their rich clinical experience and excellent technology, successfully defuse one “untimely bomb”, saving thousands of lives.
