What are the characteristics of traumatic asphyxia?

The characteristic signs of traumatic asphyxia are venous stasis of the face, head and neck, and upper limbs, as well as ruptured small blood vessels with bluish-purple petechiae. Although it brings about significant cosmetic changes, simple traumatic asphyxia usually resolves after 2-3 weeks, and some patients have abnormalities such as bulging eyes and impatience that disappear with treatment. Changes other than traumatic asphyxia, such as sternal fractures and intracranial haematomas, require more rigorous treatment to prevent them from affecting the patient’s quality of life in the long term.
