Before imaging became popular, the stethoscope was useful for diagnosing pneumonia. In cases of pneumonia infection, the stethoscope can be used to hear wet rales and dry rales at the site of infection, and as the inflammation is absorbed, the rales will gradually decrease until they disappear. However, in modern medicine, auscultation is only an adjunctive test to facilitate patient consultation. A more scientific and safe means of diagnosing pneumonia is lung imaging, which can be used to visually observe the presence or absence of infection in the lungs for further treatment and diagnosis.
