Why is mastopexy painful?

Typical breast pain starts a week before menstruation, then gets worse day by day, and slowly relieves as soon as the menstrual period comes. The breast pain reappears week after week before the next menstrual period. The pain may also radiate to the affected armpit, chest or back of the shoulder, and in some cases it may manifest as nipple pain or itching; the pain may fluctuate with emotional changes. This pain associated with the menstrual cycle and emotional changes is the main feature of the clinical manifestation of mastopathy. The changes in the cycle of pain are related to changes in female estrogen and progesterone cycles. The mechanism of breast pain is due to increased estrogen, hyperplasia of the breast tissue and ductal system, and water and sodium retention in the tissue, which causes localized pain in the breast.
