Most fractures of the base of the fifth metatarsal are caused by sprains of the foot, but a small number of patients can also be caused by violent injuries such as bruises or traffic accidents. Because there is often bleeding at the fracture end, localized swelling can occur, and when the bleeding penetrates subcutaneously, subcutaneous bruising and ecchymosis can be seen, and there is significant pressure pain at the injury site. 3. Restriction of movement, due to swelling and pain in the foot, resulting in significant restriction of lower extremity movement. Fractures of the base of the fifth metatarsal of the foot can be recovered by conservative treatment with plaster fixation or brace fixation in multiple locations. If the fracture is significantly displaced or if there is an open fracture, surgical treatment is considered at this time.
