Is there a high mortality rate for colonic injuries?

Not considered high. In the first and second world wars, most of the colonic injuries were caused by firearms, with mortality rates at 67.5% and 35%. Nowadays, due to improvements in the level of anti-infection and nutritional support and surgical techniques, medical tests are more accurate and have significantly reduced the mortality rate, which is around 3-9%. The mortality rate is higher for patients with less obvious symptoms. Early detection and early diagnosis result in a good prognosis for most.
