What is central lung cancer?

Lung cancer is divided into central type lung cancer and peripheral type lung cancer according to its anatomical location. Central-type lung cancer refers to lung cancer that originates in the bronchi or lobar bronchi and is located near the hilum.

Central lung cancer occurs in the hilum, bronchus, and interlobular bronchus. Because of the anatomy, these patients have early clinical manifestations because the cancer tissue compresses the trachea or grows in the airway, which can cause pulmonary atelectasis and obstructive pneumonia. The prognosis is much worse than that of peripheral lung cancer.

Peripheral lung cancer is far from the hilum and has few early symptoms; if detected early and treated promptly, the prognosis is relatively good compared with central lung cancer.

The lung cancer is a very important part of the disease.
