When should a patient visit a nephrologist?

In today’s increasingly sophisticated medical subspecialties, many patients often encounter the question: Which department should I see? In order to help you solve this problem, we will briefly introduce to you today which symptoms suggest that you may need to go to nephrology and the current scope of our department. Nephrology treats a wide range of diseases, including nephritis, nephropathy, renal failure and urinary tract infections. As a patient, it is recommended to visit the nephrology department when you have the following symptoms (1) Hematuria: This includes increased urine red blood cells found on physical examination and hematuria visible to the naked eye. (2) Increased foam in urine: This symptom is mostly indicative of proteinuria, and you are advised to seek medical attention promptly. (3) Edema: especially in patients with bilateral eyelid edema and symmetrical edema of both lower limbs. (4) Elevated blood creatinine: Any elevated blood creatinine in any case should be promptly seen to find the cause so that appropriate treatment can be given. (5) Frequent, urgent and painful urination: these symptoms often suggest the presence of urinary tract infection. On the other hand, many patients have the following misconceptions when choosing nephrology for consultation. (1) Low back pain: Generally speaking, kidney diseases rarely present significant low back pain, and some patients only have mild symptoms of low back discomfort. Patients with significant back pain are recommended to choose orthopedics or urology first. (2) Kidney deficiency: “Kidney deficiency” is a TCM concept, which is not consistent with modern medicine’s kidney disease. Most of the symptoms of so-called “kidney deficiency” are not related to kidney disease. For these patients, we recommend you to visit the TCM department or other related departments. (3) Hydronephrosis, stones, cysts, and occupancy: We recommend that you go to the urology department for prompt consultation. (4) Prostate disease: We recommend you to visit urology department.
