Complications of high myopia

High myopia refers to patients with myopia of more than -6.00, and some people call myopia greater than -10.00 super high myopia. The main cause of myopia is related to close work, especially long hours of reading and writing. However, in addition to the acquired eye use, congenital factors such as genetics cannot be ignored. High myopia can cause a lot of complications in clinical practice because the structure is very different from normal eyes, and the main complications include: 1. vitreous clouding caused by vitreous liquefaction, and patients will feel the flying mosquitoes in front of their eyes; 2. cataracts Cataracts occur earlier than normal in highly myopic eyes; 3. glaucoma The relationship between high myopia and glaucoma has been recognized, that is, high myopia is more likely to occur than glaucoma. The probability of glaucoma is greater than that of normal people. Therefore, patients with high myopia should have their intraocular pressure checked frequently; 4. Retinal detachment High myopia has a long eye axis, early vitreous liquefaction and thin retina, so retinal fissures and retinal detachment can easily occur. It is recommended that patients with high myopia have regular “dilated pupils” to check the fundus. If retinal fissure or degeneration is found, laser treatment is often required; 5. Macular fissure High myopia, especially super high myopia patients have a higher possibility of macular fissure and retinal splitting in the macula. If there is distortion in seeing and loss of vision, it is important to visit an ophthalmologist. Most of such patients need surgical treatment; 6. Choroidal neovascularization High myopia is prone to choroidal neovascularization due to its special structure. The early sensation of patients is the loss of vision and distortion of seeing. The treatment for such patients after diagnosis is mainly intraocular medication. However, the drugs are more expensive and the results are not always satisfactory.
