Excessive amniotic fluid may be associated with fetal anomalies (malformations of most organ systems, congenital infections), but may also be caused by placental cord pathology, allogeneic immunity, multiple pregnancies, and gestational diabetes mellitus. In other patients, the cause of excessive amniotic fluid is not very clear.
