Heart of the Reproduction Center, Embryo Culture Room

There is a consensus in the reproductive medicine community that the embryo culture room is the “heart” of a reproductive center, and a high level reproductive center must have an efficient and high quality embryo culture room. For more than ten years, I have served as the head of embryo culture room in the reproduction center of Zhongshan First Hospital and Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital, and now I continue to serve as the head of culture room in the reproduction center of Zhongshan Sixth Hospital, I am engaged in both clinical and laboratory work of reproductive medicine, so I have a deeper appreciation of the importance of clinical and laboratory to the reproduction center. I believe that the embryo culture room is the “heart” of the fertility center, and the clinical is the “brain” of the fertility center, and the clinical and laboratory are like a pair of wings of the fertility center, which are indispensable and must work together in order to fly high. In the IVF process, embryo culture is the next step in the clinical process. After the clinician’s individualized and meticulous work to provide well-developed eggs of good quality, the culture room then plays a crucial role, where quality control and every step of the operation will determine the future fate of each egg: will it be fertilized properly? Will it develop into a good quality embryo? In our work, we treat each egg as a little life, and we do everything so that she can become a straight life. For every patient who comes to the clinic, they are familiar with everything in the clinic, the registration desk, the waiting hall, the consultation room, the ultrasound room, the examination room, the infusion room, the blood draw room, and the skilled and kind doctors and nurses they see every day, this is the clinic in their eyes, but what is the embryo culture room like? I am afraid that none of the patients can see it. Not only the patients don’t know it, but also the clinicians and nurses in our center can’t enter the culture room without permission, so many of them have never seen the real face of the embryo culture room, now I will unveil the veil of secrecy for you and introduce the heart of the fertility center: embryo culture room. The embryo culture room in our center is divided into several main areas: 1. semen processing room: as the name suggests, this is the place where semen is processed. There are centrifuges, microscopes, incubators and other equipment needed for semen processing, and the semen sent in from the transfer window of the sperm collection room is professionally optimized to select sperm with good vitality to fertilize the eggs. 2.Egg collection area: On the adjacent side of the egg retrieval operating room, there are imported class 100 ultra-clean workstations and microscopes. We operate in the ultra-clean workstation and under the microscope, the eggs removed by the clinician are sucked into a special culture solution with a glass pipette for cultivation. 3.Microscopic operation area: also in the class 100 ultra-clean workstation, with inverted microscope and microscopic manipulator, is the place to do microscopic injection fertilization. If the culture room is the “heart” of the fertility center, then this is the “heart” of the culture room, where each patient’s eggs and embryos will spend the first important days of life. The embryo freezing and thawing room is the heart of the culture room. 5. Embryo freezing and thawing room: The remaining embryos of good quality are frozen and preserved in liquid nitrogen using a special technique, and then thawed out for transfer when needed. All the above areas are in clean space and we monitor the quality of each area, each instrument and each culture room every day to ensure that each embryo of each infertility patient can grow in a warm, clean and comfortable environment.
