The difficulty of genital herpes is that it is very easy to recur and difficult to cure. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, this is due to dampness and heat poisoning in the lower jiao for a long time, depletion of qi and injury to yin, damage to the liver, spleen and kidneys, resulting in positive deficiency and evil love, and internal trapping of yin deficiency and damp heat; from the perspective of modern western medicine, latent HSV infection (usually in the sacral nerve root area, which can last for several years or even for life) is the root cause of genital herpes recurrence, and the re-activity of latent HSV in the body is closely related to the immune and non-immune (such as endocrine, physical) factors of the body. The re-activation of latent HSV in the body is closely related to immune and non-immune (such as endocrine, physical) factors. According to TCM theory and modern medical knowledge, we believe that the treatment of genital herpes can start from the following two aspects: firstly, clearing heat and dampness, drying dampness and detoxifying dampness (anti-viral, clearing latent HSV), and secondly, benefiting qi and nourishing yin, tonifying liver, spleen and kidneys, supporting the righteousness and eliminating evil (improving and enhancing the immunity of the body). In the initial and exacerbation periods, the main focus should be on clearing heat and detoxifying the toxin and dispelling dampness, while in the remission period, the main focus should be on helping the righteousness and supporting the dispelling of evil, or both. In our long-term clinical practice, we use TCM evidence-based treatment, together with modern medicine anti-viral, improve immune therapy, can make the majority of patients with recurrent genital herpes prolong the attack period, reduce the attack, or even no attack.
