Treatment of congenital microphthalmia

Congenital microtia is a congenital abnormality of the eyelid that is characterized by abnormally short eyelids, a widened medial canthus and medial canthal spacing, and ptosis. Because ptosis is severe in patients with microphthalmia, the upper lid obscures the pupil and affects vision development, so it is often associated with amblyopia and requires early treatment, which usually begins at age 3. The surgery is performed in two stages, with the first surgery to correct the canthus and widening of the inner canthus, followed by surgery 3-6 months later to correct the ptosis.    Zhao Ying, Oculoplastics, Beijing Tongren Hospital
