If the tongue can see the bottom, it is thin moss; if it does not see the bottom, it is thick moss. If there is thick moss and stomache, the main consideration is indigestion or heavy dampness, dampness trapping the spleen and stomach, resulting in malfunction of the spleen and stomach transportation, and rebellious stomach qi appearing as stomache. Some of these patients often eat cold food and like to drink cold drinks, and some of them often take cold baths or swim, which themselves are heavy with cold and dampness, leading to thicker tongue moss. Poor digestive function and spleen and stomach transportation function can lead to upward rebellion of stomach qi and phlegm-dampness accumulation in the spleen and stomach, resulting in phlegm-dampness upward disturbance on the tongue moss, i.e. thick white tongue moss. Some of the white thick tongue moss like tofu crumbs can be seen in the elderly who are bedridden for a long time, mold infection, which needs to be tested and cultured. If there is a fungal infection, antifungal treatment is needed. Some oral diseases can also cause white and greasy tongue. Clinically, some patients have bad teeth on one side and often chew on the other side, resulting in thin tongue moss on one side and thick tongue moss on the other side, which needs to be differentiated.
