Young students often do not have a lot of personal opinions when they are faced with important choices in life, and they have a feeling of uncertainty, indecision and entanglement. I felt this way when I was young, and therefore, I always wanted some help and guidance. I know that when faced with an important decision in life, it is difficult to make a decision because we don’t know what is ahead of us and we don’t have a clear picture in our mind. This is because we haven’t experienced it ourselves and we don’t know the difference, so we don’t know what to expect. In view of this, as a person who has been there, I would like to provide some relevant information for young students based on my personal experience. My purpose in doing so is to provide a voluntary service. Therefore, those who think my article has reference value, please try to enjoy it, and those who think my article has the suspicion of misleading, please avoid it. By my personal feeling, young people are more entangled in the question of whether to go to graduate school. Today, I’m going to offer some personal insights into this issue. The best way to solve this problem is to understand the main differences between undergraduate and graduate students. Once you know these differences, you can make a choice based on your specific situation. Before talking about this topic specifically, it is also important to affirm that: 1. I am talking about the general situation and not for individual extreme examples. 2, I myself studied undergraduate in China, and master’s and doctoral degrees in the United States. As a result, some of my views do not necessarily match the current social reality in China. If they do, please add corrections. 1. Ability and interest. Usually, people who go to graduate school still need to have some ability. They are usually the better students in the same grade. Of course, my definition of ability here refers to the better readers. Being well read doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll eat well in society. People who eat well in society are more socially active, as you will surely agree. As a result, graduate students generally enjoy reading more than undergraduates, are more interested in research, and are probably more responsible. To put it simply, graduate students are the best of the undergraduates. Of course, there are some undergraduates who also excel, but, for one reason or another, do not go to graduate school, which is a special case. Someone with a graduate educational background should at least have the ability to think independently and perform specific tasks independently. In terms of scientific research, they should be able to take up topics or projects independently, which is difficult for undergraduates to do. 2. Learning and literacy. Undergraduates learn almost all the dead knowledge, that is, the knowledge that is copied from the books. Graduate students, in addition to the knowledge they learn from books, are more concerned with learning ways to apply this knowledge to solve practical problems in social life and nature. Graduate students generally have deeper and richer knowledge than undergraduates. During the study period, undergraduates belong to the group living state, that is to say, several people live in the same dormitory, in the same classroom, in the same laboratory to do the same experiments, there is hardly any independent opportunity to engage in their own interest in research. This is not the case for graduate students, who, in addition to living in their own small apartments, have many opportunities and places where they can conduct independent design and research. Given this difference in learning environments, and after graduate level training, graduate students should, in general, be more educated in life. Their speech and demeanor should also be more characterized by philosophical thinking and logical reasoning. 3. Prospects and income. First of all, it should be noted that we are discussing the same specialty or the same occupation here. This is because different professions and occupations pay very different salaries, so the incomes of different professions and occupations cannot be compared. Generally speaking, in the case of equal years of service, or when an organization recruits a bachelor’s degree student and a master’s degree or doctor’s degree at the same time, the latter’s salary must be higher than that of the former. However, it is usually the case that in the same class, one is working right out of undergraduate school and the other is studying for a PhD. By the time one gets his PhD, five years have passed. By that time, if that undergraduate has done a good job and has been promoted and advanced, the salary may not be that much worse than that of the doctoral student. However, no matter what, except for some administrative special cases, generally speaking, in the same organization, in terms of research work, graduate students are always more valued and reused than undergraduates. In a research team, in most cases, PhDs lead masters and masters lead undergraduates. In terms of employment, generally speaking, undergraduates are more advantageous, and undergraduates have a wider range of choices than graduate students. Graduate students generally have a narrower range of career choices. As a result, in the United States, a doctorate once unemployed at home for a period of time, it is difficult to find an ideal job again. 4. Cost and age. On the issue of age, it must be very clear to everyone that the age of undergraduates at graduation must be lower than that of graduate students at graduation. Therefore, undergraduates have an advantage in terms of age. This is because youth is wealth. When it comes to cost, there is a certain amount of expense involved in going to graduate school. Although schools and instructors may provide some financial assistance. However, after these subsidies are deducted from the tuition and fees, there is not much left for the student. In the U.S., a doctoral student usually carries some loans when he or she first graduates, and it takes a few years of graduating and working to slowly pay off that loan. Undergraduates work right after graduation and can usually have some savings. Cost and age can affect plans to start a family. Generally, undergraduates marry at a lower age than graduate students. So, undergraduates may get married early and have children early. My peers back home have grandchildren and I don’t. They all got married and had children earlier than I did. My own sister and brother in law got married and had children earlier than I did. These are the best examples. 5. Planning and choices. Undergraduates can plan their lives a little earlier than graduate students and can have a specific program to execute. Starting a family is one of the main tasks for undergraduates right after graduation. Undergraduates can also make different choices depending on the circumstances. For example, when the conditions are right, they can choose to continue to graduate school. Graduate students have to plan their lives a little later. In graduate school, there is little time and energy to deal with the house, car and find a partner, but almost all the energy and time spent on learning and research, to publish a paper, to worry about whether it is possible to successfully get a degree, is not it? In life choices, graduate students walk a one-way bridge, only continue to go on or escape two options. To summarize, if you are an ambitious, long-term interests of people, you like to read, think, and explore, then, you should have no choice but to go to graduate school. If you are a person who is satisfied with the status quo, practical and enjoy life, that is to say, you like “wife and children hot pillow” this kind of life style, then you do not have to go to graduate school.
