Cleaning of normal human ears usually refers to the removal of dirt from the external ear canal, which is medically known as cerumen, commonly known as earwax, and is generally recommended to be cleaned once every 15-30 days. Cerumen itself is one of the normal substances secreted by the cerumen glands on the skin of the external ear canal. Since it contains substances such as oil and grease, it has the function of blocking foreign bodies, protecting the eardrum and reducing noise, so regular cleaning is sufficient. Frequent cleaning can also be detrimental to the ear, causing irritation and damage to the skin of the external ear canal. In general, the ear canal itself has a physiological self-purification effect, such as when normal people burp, sneeze, chew and other situations that cause facial movement, the cerumen in the external ear canal will also be pushed and can be discharged normally, so the cleaning interval is relatively long. Cleaning also needs to be moderate. If the external ear canal is cleaned frequently, it may cause damage to the skin of the external ear canal and induce skin inflammation such as otitis externa and folliculitis. The external ear canal itself is narrow and deep, so if the tympanic membrane is accidentally damaged or pierced during cleaning, it may cause hearing loss or even permanent hearing loss. If the earwax is found to be too much or too large during the cleaning process, you can use saline or special cleaning oil for cleaning the ear canal to clean the ear. It is not clinically advisable to use an ear digger or cotton swab to clean the outer ear canal as it can easily damage the skin, but if done properly, these clean tools can be used. If cerumen forms an embolism and is difficult to clean on your own, it is recommended that you seek medical attention. It is also important to note that if foreign objects such as dirty water or flying insects enter the ear due to an accident, and if you feel itchy, painful, or other abnormalities in the skin of the ear, it is recommended that the ear be cleaned in a timely manner to avoid adverse consequences.
